Our design research for the Experience Builder project led us to the conclusion that the problem with public spaces in NYC doesn’t lie in the availability, but in the maintenance of these.
After carefully revising our observations on the subject matter, diverse insights pointed us in the direction to understand that one way to address this issue is by involving the local community in looking after these places.
Aiming to promote a long term relationship, which, as a result, nurtures a sense of belonging and identity, achieving community engagement.

How might we facilitate shared, desired experiences in public spaces?
The Experience Builder enables you to test a possible scenario by understanding potential users and the different elements these may interact with.
It is intended to be used as an iterative activity during the design process to better comprehend the target audience and what is needed to translate it into a long-term engagement.
It aims to address needs and motivations of the user by asking:
· what is the reason/motive/excuse that makes them visit that space?
· how do you think of the user and what they’re going to do there?
Sure We Can
LEAP Entrepreneurship Club at The New School
Date: Fall 2016 / Spring 2017
Roles: Design Strategist, Design Researcher, Project Manager.
Members: Suma Balaram, Harold Padilla, Gautam Chaitanya, Valentina Beltran.
‘Reach out to LEAP’ (ROL) is an on-demand activity where students and professionals within the NYC community are invited to bring and share their ideas and/or concerns related to their ongoing projects and have retroactive feedback from our most important resource, a group of people willing to co-create an inclusive experience.
Our objective of this workshop was to have an immersive experience to understand the nature of Sure We Can’s role in the recycling ecosystem by analyzing the impact of their strategy, in order to define pain points to address them as innovative opportunities.
The New School places collaborative, project-based learning at the center of the educational experience. It prioritizes humanity and culture in designing systems and environments to improve the human condition, an approach that draws on design thinking and the liberal, creative, and performing arts.
